General Information on Ireland

This section will provide you with information on Ireland and what to expect when you are here. Travelling to Ireland from the United States is quite an adventure, especially for the first time visitor. For a country so small, Ireland is amazingly diverse with much to offer the visitor. With this great diversity there is a lot to pack in over a relatively short period. Time therefore being of the essence, the following general information is aimed at giving you some insight about this little country, in order to help you greater appreciate and understand its inner-workings and characteristics while there.

Ireland is a country often misconceived. It's portrayal on the big screen and television frequently gives the impression of a quaint and backward place, devoid of modern concerns and worries. This (certain more remote parts excepted!!) is largely untrue.

In recent years Ireland's economy has enjoyed an impressive upturn in fortunes. The aptly named Celtic Tiger has become the platform for much social, financial and indeed technological advancement. Virtually all consumer comforts and modern conveniences available in the U.S. are also on the Irish market. They may take a slightly different form or be marginally superior or inferior, but are nonetheless quite similar.

There are however many ways in which the two countries are worlds apart. The most obvious would have to be the attitude and language of the Irish people. The country as a whole is far more laid back and to an extent disorganized. People take more time to relax and enjoy themselves, whether this be by engaging in lengthy friendly conversion with a complete stranger or spending many hours in the comforting and inviting atmosphere of the local pub.
People aren't nearly as concerned about their physical appearance, fitness or weight and while this is arguably not a good thing it definitely adds to Ireland's easy-going feel.
